Parks Maintenance Worker

This is varied, semi-skilled work in a variety of public lands and building maintenance activities. Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of general laboring and maintenance work in the care and upkeep of public buildings, park grounds, recreational facilities, and streets.

Work may involve the operation of light and heavy automotive equipment, tractors, mowers, and similar equipment in the course of completing work assignments. A supervisor assigns and reviews work; work is reviewed while in progress and through observation and results obtained.

Essential Functions:
Mows grass with small tractor, self-propelled riding mower, or hand mower; picks up litter; may spray weeds; fertilizes grass; applies insecticides and herbicides. Performs a variety of semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, electrical, and plumbing repairs at park facilities; paints interiors and exteriors of recreational facilities and similar structures; repairs vandalism at park facilities.
Operates water sprinklers to irrigate grass, shrubbery, and flowers; installs underground sprinklers and maintains them as needed. Paints strips on ball fields; picks up trash; cleans restrooms; cuts and trims trees, clears tree limbs, operates dump trucks to haul debris.

Plants grass, flowers, trees, and other plants; water ground and plants; rakes leaves; cuts brush. Operates dump truck, front-end loader, bucket truck in transporting materials and supplies; assists in loading and unloading trucks; may occasionally operate heavier types of equipment.

Installs and maintains playground equipment in parks; performs park and building construction work as needed; sets up and moves bleachers to different park sites. Performs routine maintenance on equipment used in carrying out job activities. Performs other related duties as assigned by the employee's supervisor.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License. Beginning pay rate is $12.68/ hour. Apply at Columbus NE City Hall by Wednesday March 10, 2010.
