Transfer Station
Groundbreaking Ceremony
Groundbreaking Ceremony
On Monday, March 10, 2014, city officials and community leaders assembled at the site of the proposed new transfer station for a groundbreaking ceremony. This groundbreaking followed the award of the contract to B-D Construction, Inc. for the work, one week earlier, March, 3, 2014, in the amount of $3,245,000. B-D Construction, Inc., proposes to utilize numerous other local contractors as subcontractors on this large public project.

B-D Construction, Inc. also completed a contract for soil surcharge last fall on which the new station will be constructed. Compaction of the mound of soil has met the required soil consolidation standard so new construction can begin. The first step will be to shave the top 10 feet off of the mound and prepare the adjacent area for construction of the access roads to and around the station. The soil removed from the mound will be replaced in the borrow area on the site.

Once the preparatory earthwork has been completed, constructing the pavement and the new building will start. It is expected the facility will be completed and ready for use in late 2014. As further progress is made, additional information and photos of the progress will be provided for review.

Work is progressing on schedule for the new Transfer Station. Most of the service roadway work has been completed, tipping floor poured, loading area built and, as is evident from the pictures steel is being erected for the station shell. In addition, interior infrastructure, water, sewer and electrical services, is being installed. Next spring, landscaping will be placed around the north and western perimeters with 135 evergreen trees being planted. The new loader and attachment have been ordered. The city began replacing trailers last year and will modify existing trailers to facilitate the new refuse loading method.

Prior to completion, the new scale and scalehouse will be installed in advance of the expected November opening of the new station.

Questions about the project can be addressed to Wm. Roger Buell, P.E., Public Works Director or Joe Mangiamelli, City Administrator at 402-562-4260 or 402-562-4233, respectively or at .
