[ARCHIVED] April is Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Month in Columbus

Proclamation

Mayor Jim Bulkley wasted no time during this week’s Columbus City Council meeting signing a proclamation declaring April 2023 in town as Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Month.

Representatives from nonprofits Guardians of the Children and the CFP Childhood Prevention Council made the request in honor of April being National Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month, a time when child wellness and child welfare organizations across the U.S. elevate the importance of creating systems and programs that put children and families first.

The Guardians of the Children Heartland Chapter aims to recognize and react to child abuse and educate the public to do the same; to serve as advocates to provide strength and stability to families in crisis; and be an answer to the prayer of an abused child or teen for courage, support and protection.

The CFP Childhood Prevention Council is dedicated to strengthening families by providing resources, awareness and education in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and encourage the positive development of children.

Bulkley and the representatives gathered around a table in the City Council Chambers on April 3rd so that he could finish signing the proclamation and taking a photo with the collective. He said he was proud to show support for an extremely worthy cause.

“I encourage all citizens to recognize this month by dedicating ourselves to the task of improving the quality of life for all children and families,” he said, during the meeting, adding his appreciation for all the work the nonprofits do.

City of Columbus leaders and staff members were among the many local residents who wore blue on Wednesday, April 5th, as part of a local “Wear Blue Day” effort by the CFP Childhood Prevention Council to raise awareness for child abuse.
